Sports safety

Importance of sports safety:

  • To prevent any injuries (muscles, bones, etc.)

    • which may lead to disability

    • may also lead to inconveniences

  • Repercussions and aftermath if sports safety are not carried out properly

    • One may be traumatised mentally by the accident

    • may even affect others or injure others

Sports safety is really important and a few general tips may give you an idea how sports safety should be carried out.

#1  Wear safety gear or attire

Wear appropriate and fitting safety gear while doing sports. These safety gear helps to minimize or absorb impact when accidents happen, also reducing the probability of one getting injured. HOWEVER, safety gear does not guarantee sports to be injury-free, but one has to be alert at all times

Protective gear eg. helmets, face guards etc.

#2 Do not exercise/do sports with a painful injury

If there is a lingering pain while you exercise or do sports, it signifies that you should take a break instead of continuing, as continuing may cause an unknown injury (which caused the pain) to become more severe. It is also best to see a specialist if you have any physical conditions, which may not permit you to do vigorous exercises.

#3  Do not exercise/do sports in poor weather conditions

One should not exercise outdoors in poor weather as nature is unpredictable, and one would get sick or injured if he or she were to do so in a bad weather. It is best to plan ahead before exercising outdoors, by checking the weather forecast. It is also dangerous to exercise if there is lightning, as lightning can strike quickly and kill people (est. of 24000 people killed by lightning strikes).

#4  Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise/sports

Fluids (especially water) are very important before, during and after exercise. One must be hydrated well since water is lost from the body during exercise through sweat and perspiration. Water allows nutrients and oxygen to be transported around the body without the heart needing to pump hard. Also, it is good to drink water on a sunny and hot day during exercise to prevent heatstrokes etc.

#5  Warm up before/after exercises and sports

Stretching before exercises allows muscles to be prepared or get ready for strenuous exercise, so that they can reduce muscle injuries during exercise. Different sports/exercises require different muscles to be used during the exercise/sports, thus the warm-up varies depending on the sport.

Eg. Warm-up jogs before marathon etc.
